Return to your roots
bannau brycheiniog
Before the take-over, there was a kingdom.
Six hundred years before the Saxons & Normans laid a single stone, Welsh kings ruled this land. They held court beside a lake. And they left us history and myth by the pail.
Brecon is not a city that forgot its past, it simply never shouted about it.
And we think it is long past time it was heard.

What is this day?
This is a full day gathering for people who feel the pull of Cymru in their bones. Whether that pull comes from ancestry, from spirit, or from something you don't quite have words for yet - you are welcome here.
We will spend the day together inside a building that has stood for over 700 years. We will fill it with story, with song, with the Welsh language, and with the kind of making that our ancestors did with their hands each spring.
This is a day for people who know that history is not something that happened to someone else, and that tradition is only alive for as long the folk practice it.

The Day Includes:
Performative Storytelling with Stella Marie & Victoria Folkheart
Stella Marie and Victoria will bring you old and new tales the way they were always meant to be told - not read from a page, but performed. Felt. Breathed into the room.
Welsh myth was never meant to be quiet. The Cyfarwydd’s role was to make you remember things you didn't know you'd forgotten. That is what we intend to do.
Welsh Language for All Abilities - Through Chant & Song
You do not need to have previously spoken a word of Cymraeg to be part of this.
We will learn together, through sound and song, through the kind of chanting that carries meaning in the body before the mind catches up. The Welsh language is old enough to hold ancestral memory in its vowels. When you sound it out, something in you recognises it.
Nature Crafts - Make Your Own Beltane Crown
Beltane is almost here.
We will make green crowns and flower wreaths together - to wear on the day, to take home, and to place on your altar or in your home as the wheel turns toward the incoming fire festival.
There is something quietly powerful about making something with your hands in the company of others, in a place as old as this one. We will not rush it.
A Walk Through the Museum - Britain's Oldest Carved Stonework
The Brecknock Museum and Art Gallery holds something that most people walk straight past.
Some of the oldest Celtic Christian stones in Britain are kept here complete with Latin AND Ogham inscriptions, hinting at the multi-cultural diversity of Cymru even in the “dark ages”.
And for those of you into crafts, you will find the most amazing pieces in this space, even down to a gold ring that looks like it could “rule them all”.
We will meet them properly. We will take our time. We will let them tell us what they have witnessed.
The Venue
We are gathering in a building in the heart of Brecon that has stood for over 700 years.
Brecon sits in a landscape that was sacred long before the town had a name. The Beacons rise around it. Llyn Syfaddan - Llangorse Lake - sits just a few miles east, where the old stories say a sunken palace lies beneath the water, and where the kings of Brycheiniog once held their power.
We are not separate from that history. We are the continuation of it.

"I've been lucky enough to have joined in various sound journeys all over the world, and the intimate space and caring really stands out to me."

stella marie
Stella explores what she calls embodied mythology, where land-based live storytelling, Earth blessings and deep mapping come together, discovering the ecology, folklore and history of place to create new stories, through ceremony and performance for the modern world, while reclaiming the ancient Welsh role of the Cyfarwydd; aural storytelling, record keeping and wisdom sharing.
Stella invites you to weave history, folklore and ecology into your life through reclaiming ancestry, heritage and your relationship to the more-than-human world, which together, can remind us of our inherent wildness, fostering a deep sense of belonging and communion with each other and life.
